Join us for an engaging event featuring Judge Hilary Charlesworth and a discussion on key issues in international law. This is in-person only event, and no registration is required. Lunch will be available in the Wharton Room from 12.15 and the talk will be in the Old Library from 12.45pm. We look forward to your participation in this insightful event.

Speaker's Bio:

Hilary Charlesworth is a judge of the International Court of Justice, to which she was first elected in 2021. Before this, she held a number of academic positions, most recently at the Australian National University and the University of Melbourne. She has been a visiting professor at various institutions including Harvard Law School, New York University Law School and the London School of Economics. Her research interests include the workings of the international human rights system, sources of international law, feminist approaches to international law and visual cultures of international law. She has served on the executive boards of the Asian Society of International Law and the American Society of International Law and as President of the Australian and New Zealand Society of International Law. She is a member of the Institut de Droit International and a Corresponding Fellow of the British Academy.

The Public International Law (PIL) Discussion Group at the University of Oxford is a key focal point for PIL at Oxford and hosts a weekly speaker event. Topics involve contemporary and challenging issues in international law. Speakers include distinguished international law practitioners, academics, and legal advisers from around the world.

The Discussion Group's meetings are part of the programme of the British Branch of the International Law Association and are supported by the Law Faculty and Oxford University Press. 

The speaker will commence at 12:45pm UK time and speak for about forty minutes, allowing about twenty-five minutes for questions and discussion. The meeting should conclude before 2:00 pm UK time.

Practitioners, academics, and students from within and outside the University of Oxford are all welcome.
