Dr Alpa Parmar was appointed as a non-judicial member of the Sentencing Council in April 2018. The Sentencing Council is an independent, non-departmental public body of the Ministry of Justice which has responsibility for developing sentencing guidelines.
As part of her role as a member of the Sentencing Council (and alongside her colleagues at the Council), Alpa will advise on the approach to be taken to sentencing offences, the guidance to be issued to courts and the identification and analysis of relevant research and data. The Sentencing Council was created in 2010 and aims to promote a clear, fair and consistent approach to sentencing, to produce analysis and research on sentencing and works to improve public confidence in sentencing.
