ESRC Celebrating Impact Prize
Rachel Condry, Associate Professor of Criminology, is the joint runner up in the 'Outstanding Impact in Public Policy' category at the ESRC Impact Awards.
Dr Condry's large-scale study of adolescent-to-parent violence highlighted the hidden plight of many thousands of families across the UK, leading to new policy guidance and improved responses by statutory and voluntary agencies.
Involving domestic violence organisations, youth justice services, and the police in the research project from the start, Dr Condry was able to secure a government commitment to explore the development of a policy guide for practitioners when the extent of the problem became clear. Her analysis of data from the Metropolitan police, for example, revealed 1,892 cases of 13 to 19-year-olds committing violence against their own parents in Greater London alone over a 12-month period from 2009-10. This provided the first official evidence of the problem in the UK.
The annual prize provides an opportunity to recognise and reward researchers whose work has made a real difference to society or the economy. The prize is awarded to ESRC-funded social science researchers who have achieved impact through outstanding research, collaborative partnerships, engagement or knowledge exchange activities.
The awards ceremony took place at Central Hall, Westminster on the evening of 22 June 2016, where the winners were announced.
