Bonavero Institute of Human Rights is co-hosting with Oxford Lawyers Without Borders are pleased to invite you to attend the first of a three-part Alternative Law Careers Panel Series running this Trinity. We are excited to host speakers from various NGOs and legal charities to provide insight and information about pursuing non-commercial legal careers at organisations such as the ones they are representing.

The first session will focus on NGOs, and will include Charlie Loudon (REDRESS), Gabriela Quijano (Amnesty International) ,Jana Sadler-Forster (Blackstone Chambers / Open Society Justice Initiative) and Maya Foa (Reprieve).

Charlie Loudon represents REDRESS, an organisation aimed at seeking justice for victims of torture. He represents REDRESS’s clients before international courts, tribunals, and human rights bodies both in the UK and abroad. He studied at Oxford and SOAS, spent time at the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda and the Ghana Center for Democratic Development, and practised as a solicitor for 6 years at an international law firm.

Gabriela Quijano is the legal adviser on business and human rights at the International Secretariat of Amnesty International. Since 2009, she has led the organization’s work on access to remedy for business-related human rights abuses. In this capacity, she has done research on cases in the Americas, Asia and Africa, legal analysis on barriers to justice and advocacy to improve corporate legal accountability and remedial mechanisms. Gabriela is a qualified lawyer and completed an MA on Human Rights (Hons) from the Human Rights Centre of Essex University. Gabriela practiced civil, commercial and corporate law in Buenos Aires, Argentina, prior to moving to the UK.

Jana Sadler-Forster Jana is a member of Blackstone Chambers where she has a broad civil law practice focusing on public law and human rights. She is also instructed in professional discipline, financial services, sports, and commercial law cases. In addition to her work at Blackstone, Jana works part time at the Open Society Justice Initiative (part of the Open Society Foundations) where the Justice Initiative’s team of human rights lawyers represent individuals before domestic and international courts, in cases that have sought not only to vindicate individual claims, but to establish and strengthen the law’s protection for all.

Maya Foa is the Director of the legal charity Reprieve, and leads a team of lawyers, investigators, campaigners, and policy advisors fighting against grave human rights abuses. She has conducted extensive advocacy before the governments of Europe, the United States and regional and international bodies, and has served as an expert advisor to the European Commission. Maya studied French and Italian at Oxford, was a World Economic Forum Young Global Leader (2018), and won the SMK Women Demanding Justice award (2015).
