Dapo Akande nominated for election as Judge to the International Court of Justice

The Faculty of Law is pleased to announce that Dapo Akande, Chichele Professor of Public International Law and Fellow of All Souls College, Oxford, is to be nominated by the UK National Group of the Permanent Court of Arbitration, and supported by the UK Government, for election as a Judge of the International Court of Justice (ICJ).

The ICJ, which is based in the Hague and composed of 15 Judges, hears and determine cases between States and renders advisory opinions at the request of the United Nations. Judges on the Court are elected by United Nations General Assembly and Security Council. Professor Akande’s nomination will be for elections due to take place in 2026.

In addition to his academic work, Professor Akande is a member of the United Nations International Law Commission responsible for the codification and progressive development of international law. He has also acted as counsel in cases before international tribunals, including the International Court of Justice, and is regularly called upon to provide advice on international law issues to states, international organizations and civil society organizations.

In announcing the nomination, His Majesty’s Ambassador to  the Netherlands Joanna Roper CMG said:
