Andrew Dickinson delivers Special Course at Hague Academy of International Law

Andrew Dickinson, Professor of the Conflict of Laws, recently delivered a Special Course at the Hague Academy of International Law  on ‘Natural justice in recognition and enforcement of foreign judgments’.

In five lectures, delivered in a single week to students participating in the private international law section of the Academy’s prestigious summer course, Professor Dickinson explored the influence of writers on natural law and the law of nations in the 17th and 18th centuries (from Hugo Grotius to Emer de Vattel). Additionally, he discussed the development of the legal rules governing the reception and effectiveness of foreign judgments in legal orders around the world.He argued in favour of ‘re-naturalisation’ of the law in this area, to promote principles of natural justice—ensuring the peaceful settlement of disputes while upholding fundamental standards of justice, with reference to procedural requirements.
