UKRI cross research council responsive mode pilot scheme

Notify Faculty of Intention to Apply by: TBC

Funder Deadline: 19 November 2024

Apply for funding for breakthrough interdisciplinary ideas that transcend, combine or significantly span disciplines.

Scope

This pilot scheme will support ideas not routinely funded through existing UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) responsive mode schemes. The project should be interdisciplinary and potentially transformative in nature. Applications where there is a clear alternative research council scheme that could be applied to or where some component disciplines appear 'bolted on' are unlikely to be successful.

Eligibility

You can apply as an individual or consortium, based in a single institute or across a number of institutions. You may be the principal investigator on only 1 application to this round of the pilot scheme. The PI is expected to have a PhD and should be based at an eligible research institution in the UK with a contract of employment that covers or can be extended to cover the time of the grant.

Duration and Funding

The full economic cost of the project should be between £200,000 and £1.2 million (UKRI will fund 80% FEC), and can run for up to two years. The earliest start date for your project can be 1 July 2024. A period of up to six months from the date of the award letter to the commencement of grant activity is permitted.

How to Apply

The outline stage of this scheme will open 2 September 2024.

The launch of the pilot scheme will be supported by a webinar for prospective applicants and research support staff, with dates available of 5 September 2024 at 10:00am and 11 September 2024 at 2:00pm. The webinar will be recorded, and a copy published on the UKRI site for this opportunity.

Outline applications must be submitted through the Joint Electronic Submission (Je-S) system by 19 November 2024 4:00pm

Internal deadlines for notifications to the Faculty of intention to apply will be confirmed later in the summer. Please note that due to the first round of this scheme being very competitive, with nearly 1,000 outline applications, that the number of outline applications per lead institutions will be capped for this second round (for Oxford this has been limited to 20), hence we expect the Social Science Division will run an internal selection process.

For successful outline applicants, full applications will open in April 2025 for a 3rd July 2025 submission date, and must be submitted via the UKRI's funding platform, The Funding Service (TFS)
