Transplantation Medicine in Paediatric Context I: Conflict of Interests

Closed Workshop held on 7 June 2024, at Pembroke College, University of Oxford, funded by the John Fell Fund.

The closed workshop involved engagements with lawyers, clinicians, hospital chaplains, and religious scholars to explore the following issues:

  • How the law regulates children as donors or recipients of transplants?
  • How conflict of interests or rights (between parents and children, between parents, and between families and medical professionals) are resolved in practice?
  • What role do religious/cultural beliefs and religious communities play in shaping outcomes and finding solutions?
  • How is the complexity of religion communicated to clinicians in practice?

The workshop involved four sessions, which explored how conflicts are resolved and mediated in law and in practice. The discussion involved an inter-disciplinary lens and comparative approach, drawing upon case studies and examples from various contexts.
