Interviews with the Experts’ Podcast Series in Transplantation Medicine: legal, ethical and practical challenges

Interviews with the Experts’ Podcast Series in Transplantation Medicine is part of Dr Farrah Raza's project on transplantation medicine and is funded by the Oxford Law Faculty's Internet Engagement Fund. 

This series of podcasts are aimed at the wider public, researchers, and medical societies and experts. DPhil student, Frances Hand will be sitting down with academics and practitioners to build a comprehensive picture of the legal, ethical, and clinical complexities in transplantation medicine. Each episode within the series will consist of an interview with different experts from various disciplines who will bring their own perspectives and offer a fresh insight into the field.

Episode 1 with Professor James Neuberger

Episode 1: Introduction to organ donation and transplantation with Professor James Neuberger

For our first episode of the series, DPhil student Frances Hand sits down with Professor James Neuberger to discuss introductory issues related to organ donation and transplantation. 

Professor Neuberger was the Associate Medical Director in Organ Donation and Transplantation at NHS Blood and Transplant. He has written extensively on aspects of liver disease and transplantation.

 

Episode 2: Dr Julia Rehsmann

Episode 2: The significance of waiting in liver transplantation with Dr Julia Rehsmann

For our second episode, DPhil student Frances Hand sits down with Dr Julia Rehsmann to discuss the important role that waiting plays in liver transplantation procedures. We consider how waiting can provide not only a community, but an opportunity for valuable reflection in times of uncertainty.

Dr Rehsmann is a postdoctoral researcher at the Department of Health Professions at the Bern University of Applied Sciences BFH where she is conducting ethnographic research on palliative care in Switzerland and a research associate at the Institute of Social Anthropology at the University of Bern. 

Episode 3: Dr Dale Gardiner

Episode 3: The gift of life and NHS Blood and Transplant with Dr Dale Gardiner

For our third episode, DPhil student Frances Hand will discuss Dr Dale Gardiner's work as the National Clinical Lead for Organ Donation at NHS Blood and Transplant. We discuss how the changes to English law on Organ Donation have impacted donation rates, common concerns that the public may have about organ donation, as well as the immense value that this Gift of Life can be to a recipient. 

Episode 4

Episode 4: The patient-doctor relationship and informed consent with Dr Berg and Dr Engelmann

For our fourth episode, Frances Hand discusses the value of a strong doctor-patient relationship with Professor Berg and Dr Engelmann. We discuss some of challenges to facilitating informed consent during stressful decision making. 

Professor Berg is the Head of the Division of Hepatology at the Department of Medicine at Leipzig University Medical Centre in Germany as well as a Professor of Medicine at the University of Leipzig. Dr Engelmann is Clinician Scientist and Hepatology Consultant at Charité in Berlin. Alongside Professor Berg he is also a leading Hepatology expert at the University of Leipzig.

 

 

Episode 5: Professor Jonathan Herring

Episode 5: Decisions with others: Relational Autonomy in Organ Donation and Transplantation

In Episode 5, Frances discussions consent and relational autonomy with Professor Jonathan Herring. They examine protections under the current law, as well as the difficulties that the law has with real-world decision-making, which is often made with others in mind. They discuss the benefits of organ donation and transplantation where the patient's loved ones play a key role. 

Jonathan is a Professor in Law at the University of Oxford and the DW Wolf-Clarendon fellow at Exeter College, University of Oxford.  He has written a number of books, spanning criminal, family and medical law, each examining how the law impacts the relationships which govern our lives.

Episode 6: The value of community and the Donor Family Network with David Nix

In our sixth episode, Frances Hand is joined by Mr David Nix, the founder and lifetime president of the Donor Family Network, a charity which works to support donor families. We discuss some of the ways the Donor Family Network supports donor families, the legacy that donation can be for our loves ones and the value of creating a community of people who 'get it'.
