Research Assistants in AI and the Law x 3

Professor Jeremias Adams-Prassl and Dr Six Silberman are looking for 3 research assistants to help with the iManage project Rethinking Employment Law in the Age of Algorithmic Management and editing the Oxford Handbook on Algorithmic Governance and the Law.

The project aims are to complete research on the legal literature on (the ban on) automated decision-making (RA1) and the computer science literature on ‘humans-in-the-loop’ (RA2), as well as work on the completion on an Oxford handbook (RA3).

Tasks for the Research Assistants will be

  • Writing support: including finding legal and technical resources, preparing a literature review, and drafting assistance
  • Editorial support: including referencing, proof-reading, copy-editing, contacting contributors, and liaising with publishers.
  • Event support: contacting speakers, schedule planning, circulating drafts, preparing conference materials, requesting purchase orders and invoices, collecting participant expense claims, in-person facilitation, online mediation, and taking minutes.
  • Website and online support: e.g. work on project pages, news and events items, blog posts, social media, etc.
  • Audio-visual output assistance: e.g. with recording and editing podcasts or video, etc.
  • General research project support: liaising with project members and administrators and project e-mail inbox management.

     

Duration and hours

Working hours: a total of up to 100 hours per RA across the duration of the project, to be agreed with the project supervisor.

Start date: as soon as possible

Date by which the work must be completed: 20 December 2024

 

Reporting

The Research Assistants will report to Prof Jeremias Adams-Prassl (RA1 & RA2) and Dr Six Silberman (RA3).

 

Requirements

  • A good understanding of at least one of the following, and an interest in the remaining fields and their intersections, is essential: computers and the law generally; equality/antidiscrimination law; labour law; data protection law; human-computer interaction; algorithmic fairness; science and technology studies (‘STS’)
  • Experience of, or interest in learning, the following software/applications is essential: Zotero, BibTeX, or other reference management software
  • Additional knowledge or past experience with any of the above-listed literatures/fields is desirable.
  • Experience, or interest in developing experience, of complex collaborative projects (e.g., academic conferences, edited volumes, journal special issues) is desirable.
  • Audio/video recording/editing experience is desirable.

Your normal place of work will be the Bonavero Institute of Human Rights, based at Mansfield College. However, provided you have the agreement of your PI/Supervisor, and a suitable space to work (including library access if required), it may be possible to undertake the work remotely.  

In all cases the work must be undertaken in the UK.

  • RA2: This opportunity is open to current graduate students in the Faculty of Law, Computer Science Faculty/Department, and any other Department(s) within the University of Oxford, hosting students with suitable experience/expertise (e.g., Sociology, Business, Anthropology, Philosophy, Government).

Rate of Pay

The work will be paid at £17.83 per hour, which equates to University Grade 6, point 1, on the basis of completed and approved timesheets, which must be submitted to payroll@law.ox.ac.uk by the last Friday of each calendar month for payment on the last working day of the following month.

In addition, paid annual leave will be assumed to be taken in the month in which it was accrued.

Guidelines for Faculty members, line managers and students

Graduate student engagement opportunities in the Faculty of Law usually fall into one of three categories: Research AssistantGraduate Teaching Assistant; or Blog Editor

The University guidance on paid work for Oxford graduate students recommends that full-time graduate research students ensure that any paid work should still allow them to spend at least 40 hours per week for a minimum 44 weeks of the year on their studies. Full-time graduate taught students are recommended not to undertake more than 8 hours’ paid work each week during term-time study periods.  There are additional rules for students with visas wishing to undertake paid work. 

Students may not work for their own supervisor without the approval of the Associate Dean for Graduate Students.
