Rachel Sloth-Nielsen

Biography
Rachel Sloth-Nielsen holds an LLB degree from the University of Stellenbosch and an LLM from the University of Cape Town. Her DPhil examines the child’s right to preservation of cultural identity under the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child.
Her previous publications have focused on children’s rights and LGBTQI+ rights. She has recently contributed to the foremost commentary on the African Children’s Charter, providing commentary on Article 7 (name and nationality), Article 28 (drug abuse), and Article 31 (the responsibilities of the child). She was invited by the Leiden’s Children’s Rights Observatory to write a case note on the recent decision by the CRC Committee in M.E.V v Finland, which concerned indigenous children’s rights under the UNCRC. Rachel has further conducted research into children’s access to justice. In 2024, Rachel was invited to participate in an expert consultation organised by the Identity Rights Working Group on children lacking identity for the Committee on the Rights of the Child’s upcoming General Comment 27 on access to justice and effective remedies.
Rachel has previously been awarded the St Anne’s Graduate Development Scholarship. She has taught Tort Law for St Anne’s College, Oxford, and family law at Oxford Brookes University and University College London.
