Biography

Matthew Stubbs is a Professor at the University of Adelaide Law School, where he has worked since 2003. He currently serves as Editor in Chief of the Adelaide Law Review and Director of Military Law Programs and Postgraduate Coursework Programs. Matthew’s previous research sabbaticals have included visiting appointments at the Centre for Human Rights and International Justice at Stanford University, and at the University of Washington.

Matthew’s teaching spans undergraduate and postgraduate courses, and he is an active supervisor of PhD students. His teaching and research supervision focus is on international law, human rights and Australian public law. Matthew’s teaching has been recognised by three Australian national tertiary teaching awards.

Matthew’s research addresses the intersection of international and public law, with a particular focus on military law, space law and human rights. Matthew’s published and forthcoming books address Australian constitutional law, the law of naval warfare, cyber security law and cyber resilience, and space law. He is the author of numerous articles published in prestigious peer-reviewed academic journals and chapters published in quality edited collections.

Matthew is a member of the National Human Rights Committee of the Law Council of Australia, is a member and former Chair of the Human Rights Committee and Space Law Committee of the Law Society of South Australia, and was awarded the prestigious Law Society of South Australia President’s Medal in 2023. Matthew is also a legal practitioner, and is privileged to serve as a Legal Officer (Lieutenant) in the Royal Australian Naval Reserve.
