Biography

Maria’s doctoral research focuses on the survivors of human trafficking in Romania and their experiences upon returning to the family environment. Since the Romanian criminal legal system largely fails to protect survivors of trafficking, most of them, especially the Roma, have to rely on the support of their kinship and the assistance of NGOs. Maria’s research will explore what a meaningful reintegration means for the survivors of trafficking, and it will also look at the challenges and harms that the survivors’ families experience, an aspect that has been neglected in the trafficking literature. The research is conducted under the supervision of Professor Rachel Condry and is funded by the ESRC Grand Union DTP studentship.

Maria holds a first class BA degree in Criminology from University of Westminster and an MSc in Criminology and Criminal Justice from the University of Oxford.
