Biography

Maria João Guia is author of the PhD thesis ‘Immigration, “Crimmigration” and Violent crime. The convicted inmates and the representations of Immigration and Crime” at the University of Coimbra, Portugal. She is Associate Researcher at the Center of Human Rights, at the Faculty of Law, University of Coimbra. She published two books on Immigration and Crime (2008 and 2010), edited the just published book with Springer The Illegal Business of Human Trafficking (2015), organised another in Portuguese language on crimmigration (2012), co-edited the book Social Control and Justice: Crimmigration in the Age of Fear (2012) with Maartje van der Woude and Joanne van der Leun, and she is also co-editor and editor of additional forthcoming publications. Maria was appointed in 2012 as a SYLFF Fellow for her leadership and organisational skills with a grant to develop academic projects. CINETS network (www.crimmigrationcontrol.com) has been one of her academic priorities (she is the Director of this International Net of Studies). She is also the co-chair of the Working Group ‘Immigration, Crime and Citizenship,’ together with May-Len Skilbrei at the European Society of Criminology. Maria has organised and co-organised various panels, workshops, discussion groups, and conferences under topics as immigration and crime, crimmigration, human trafficking, the rights of victims in criminal processes, the rights of immigrants, and incarceration.
