Lucy Baldwin
Biography
Lucy Baldwin is a Senior Lecturer and researcher at De Montfort University, editor/author of ‘Mothering Justice; Working with mothers in criminal and social justice settings, (Waterside Press, 2015). Lucy has worked in criminal and social justice for over 30 years, also being a qualified social worker and probation officer. Lucy’s research and publications focus predominantly on the impact of imprisonment on mothers and their children. Lucy recently gave both oral and written evidence to the Female focussed farmer review and the Joint Human Rights Committee Inquiry into Maternal Imprisonment and the rights of the child. She co-convened the ‘Women, Family, Crime and Justice’ research network. Her recent and forthcoming publications include; the enduring harms of maternal imprisonment, the relationship between prison space and maternal emotion, grandmothers in custody and as carers for children with a mother in prison, the impact of prison on maternal identity, the need for long term emotional support for post custodial mothers, and the relationship between motherhood and desistance. In 2017 she published, (jointly with Rona Epstein), a report exploring the impact of short custodial sentences on mothers and their children.
