Biography

Jonathan Liljeblad is Associate Professor at the Australian National University College of Law. He received a PhD and JD from the University of Southern California (USC), an MS from the University of Washington (UW), and a BS from the California Institute of Technology (Caltech). His research explores the challenges in promoting international norms within developing countries, using case studies involving human rights, indigenous rights, and the environment. His fieldwork is mostly in Southeast Asia, where he has served as advisor and consultant to development aid programs on rule-of-law and governance funded by the International Commission of Jurists (ICJ), Danish Institute of Human Rights (DIHR), Konrad Adenauer Stiftung (KAS), and Asia Development Bank (ADB). He was born as a member of the Pa’Oh indigenous peoples of Shan State, Myanmar, and grew up in Sweden and the United States. His time at the Bonavero Institute for Human Rights is directed towards a monograph on Indigenous Rights to Environment in International Law, as well as an edited book project on Indigenous Theories of International Law.
