Gideon Basson

DPhil Law

Biography

Gideon holds a BA, LLB, and an LLM (cum laude) from Stellenbosch University, South Africa. His research interests and publications cover critical legal theory, legal philosophy, constitutional law, and international human rights law, with a particular focus on discrimination law. 

Gideon is a Mandela Rhodes Scholar of 2020 and the recipient of the Shaun Johnson Memorial Scholarship from the Mandela Rhodes Foundation, enabling him to pursue his DPhil in Law studies full time at Oxford. Gideon is supervised by Professor Shreya Atrey, and his DPhil project considers 'fortune' as a prohibited ground of discrimination under the African Charter on Human and Peoples' Rights.

At Oxford, he is the convener of the Bonavero Graduate Research Forum. Beyond Oxford, he holds an extraordinary research fellowship at the Department of Public Law at Stellenbosch University. He is currently one of the expert drafting members of the commentary on the Maastricht Principles (IV) on the Human Rights of Future Generations
