Falak Mujtaba

Biography
Dr. Falak Mujtaba is a scholar, researcher, writer, and educator. She received her PhD from the University of Toronto. She examined the lived experiences of former immigration detainees in Canada, mapping their journeys across a continuum that includes pre-detention, detention, and post-release alternatives. This framework demonstrated how these phases collectively function as an ongoing system of control, perpetuating surveillance, regulation, and precocity at every stage. She is now focused on examining how geopolitical dynamics of immigration detention create displacement and facilitate labor exploitation, highlighting the intersection of global power, migration, and economic inequality. Falak teaches in the Critical Studies in Equity and Solidarity department at the University of Toronto. She is also on the Editorial Board at Border Criminologies. Her forthcoming book, The Detention Continuum in Canada, will be published by McGill-Queens University Press in late 2025.
