Dana-Sophia Valentiner

Biography

Dana-Sophia Valentiner is an Assistant Professor of Public Law at the University of Rostock, Germany. Her research bridges constitutional law and legal gender studies, with a particular focus on the legal protection of gender identity, sexual self-determination, and reproductive justice.

Her first book, The Fundamental Right to Sexual Self-Determination (“Das Grundrecht auf sexuelle Selbstbestimmung”, 2021), explored how autonomy and consent shape legal frameworks governing sexual rights. Building on this foundation, her current research examines Germany’s new Self-Determination Act (effective 2024), which redefines legal pathways for transgender, nonbinary and intersex people to affirm their gender in civil status registers.

Dana Valentiner’s research also extends to questions of socio-ecological transformations, with a focus on legal frameworks supporting transitions in areas such as sustainable transportation and energy systems.
