Cristina Güerri

Academic visitor

Biography

I am Cristina Güerri, Juan de la Cierva Postdoctoral Fellow in Criminology at Universidad de Málaga (Spain). I arrived in Oxford on the 2nd of April and will stay as an Academic Visitor until the end of June. This is not my first time here since I was part of the first cohort of the Europaeum Scholars Programme.

My research has focused primarily on the workings of the penitentiary system in Spain and the consequences that penitentiary policy has on people, with a specific focus on prison conditions, imprisoned migrants, and prison staff.

More specifically, I got my PhD in Law at Universitat Pompeu Fabra (Barcelona) with a thesis on the role of prison officers in Spanish prisons, analysing to what extent they contribute to the maintenance of order, provide social support to inmates, or participate in prisoner rehabilitation.

I have also researched, among other issues, on how prisoners perceive prison conditions, with a specific focus on the differences between Spanish and foreign national inmates.

During my stay, I intend to examine to what extent Spanish prisons are working as precursors to deportation in comparison to the prisons of other western European countries.
