Biography

Calogero Giametta is a lecturer in Criminology at the University of Leicester with a research focus on the criminalisation of sexualities and the political economy of migration. In his work he has examined how migration control operates through humanitarian interventions under neoliberal democracies. He has studied anti-human trafficking interventions on migrant sex workers and the right of asylum for queer people in France and in the UK. Between 2010 and 2014 his PhD thesis examined the experiences of LGBTQ+ refugees, and the discourses linking the politics of sexuality and the UK refugee granting process. This resulted in the publication of his book titled 'The Sexual Politics of Asylum' (2017). In his most recent work, he started to look at the links between historical and contemporary criminalisation of sexual/gender identity categories and queer migrations and mobilities.
