Anna Christie
Biography
Anna Christie is Departmental Lecturer in Law and Finance at the University of Oxford. Anna studied for a joint degree in Law with Accounting and Finance at the University of Aberdeen in Scotland, graduating top of her class with starred First Class Honours. Following her undergraduate studies, she pursued an LLM at Harvard Law School followed by the BCL at Balliol College, University of Oxford, where she graduated with Distinction. Later in her career, Anna earned an MBA from Stanford Graduate School of Business, and a PhD from Trinity College, University of Cambridge.
After triple-qualifying as a lawyer in New York, England & Wales and Scotland, Anna spent almost a decade in legal practice. She began her professional career as an Associate in the energy and climate change department of the international law firm CMS and later worked as a Senior Associate in cross-border mergers and acquisitions at the US law firm Skadden. Anna also spent several years working in-house at a global FTSE 100 energy company as Chief of Staff to the CEO and Senior Legal Counsel. In this dual role, she worked in the US, the UK, Australia, and Singapore, and was responsible for leading an initiative to launch a renewable energy division of the company.
Anna has broad research interests in comparative corporate governance and law and finance. Her current research primarily focuses on sustainable corporate governance, environmental and social investing, shareholder activism and takeovers. Anna's work is interdisciplinary in nature, combining legal scholarship with economic and financial analysis. She utilises empirical research methods and data science techniques to examine the impact of laws in practice and to inform policy choices.
Anna's academic research has been published in a variety of leading journals in the US, the UK, and Europe, including the University of California Davis Law Review, the Cambridge Law Journal, the Journal of Corporate Law Studies, and the European Business Organization Law Review. She is also a contributor to the Oxford Business Law Blog and the Columbia Law School Blue Sky Blog.
Anna is also a Director of Studies in Law at Newnham College, University of Cambridge, a Research Associate at the University of Cambridge Centre for Business Research and a Visiting Fellow at the LawFin Center (Center for Advanced Studies on the Foundations of Law and Finance) at Goethe University, Frankfurt.
For many years Anna has acted as an admissions interviewer for Newnham College and Trinity College at the University of Cambridge, as well as an alumna interviewer for Stanford University and Harvard University undergraduate admissions. She also interviews MBA applicants for Stanford Graduate School of Business, as part of the alumna interviewing team. Having attended a state comprehensive school in Aberdeenshire, Anna continues to remain active in a variety of outreach and social mobility initiatives that aim to widen the participation of state school pupils and students from underrepresented backgrounds in higher education, legal practice, and business.
