Andru Isac
Biography
Andru Isac is a Judge of the High Court of New Zealand. A graduate of the universities of Canterbury and Oxford, he worked predominantly in firms in New Zealand and England, and at the independent bar, practising in public, commercial and criminal litigation. As a barrister, he was involved in leading cases, including Ririnui v Landcorp Farming, challenging the legality of a decision by a state-owned enterprise to sell land subject to Māori customary interests and a Waitangi Tribunal claim. He was counsel assisting the Government Inquiry into Operation Burnham, an investigation into alleged breaches of international humanitarian law by the New Zealand Defence Force while deployed to Afghanistan. He was appointed Queen’s Counsel in 2018 and to the High Court Bench in December 2020.
Justice Isac was a Lecturer in Law at the University of Canterbury between 2001 and 2004, and continues to contribute to academic works, including as a contributing author of Todd on Torts and as the general editor of Cross on Evidence (New Zealand).
