The Oxford Business Law Blog (OBLB) was launched in March 2016.  Since its launch, the OBLB has grown quickly, its high quality and cutting-edge content rapidly attracting a wide readership. Over 1,000 readers visit the blog each day. OBLB posts impact on policy development, are cited by courts, and influence academic debate. The OBLB hosts an annual conference each year on a topical business law theme. 

The OBLB is run by a team of academic editors (Luca EnriquesHorst EidenmüllerKristin van ZwietenGenevieve Helleringer, along with four external editors, Professor Cristie Ford, Professor Georg Ringe, Professor Umakanth Varottil, and Professor Andreas Engert), and postgraduate associate editors.  1-2 new associate editors are needed to join this team.

The core duties of OBLB associate editors are:

  • soliciting blog content and corresponding with authors;
  • reviewing and editing content;
  • publishing content;
  • managing the OBLB’s social media presence.

Associate editors are also involved in developing OBLB strategy, for example around website design, building our readership base, etc, and receive feedback from contributing authors.

In the course of performing these duties associate editors enjoy many opportunities to interact with leading scholars in business law-related fields, and to develop a suite of editorial and communication skills.   

 

Duration and hours

Working hours: a total of up to 144 hours across the duration of the project, to be agreed with the OBLB team.

Start date: 19 December 2022

Work will run until 31 July 2023 (with the possibility of extension once funding from the Blog's next benefactor has been confirmed).

 

Reporting

The blog editor(s) will report to Horst Eidenmüller.

 

Requirements

Applicants should have a background in law, and preferably have some experience of study and/or practice in corporate or commercial law. In addition to a background in law, the following are essential criteria:

  • excellent (English) writing skills,
  • close attention to detail,
  • the ability to speedily identify and correct errors when editing content,
  • the ability to work effectively in a team (associate editors work collaboratively with each other and the OBLB’s academic editors).

The work can be done in any place in the UK where you have access to a good library and internet. Meetings with the OBLB team members will be held in-person in Oxford, or alternatively online.

 

Eligibility

This opportunity is open to current graduate students in the Faculty of Law and the hours are in line with the restrictions on working hours for students within the Law Faculty.

It is expected that the work will be undertaken in the UK. 

 

Rate of Pay

The work will be paid at £16.49 per hour (including the exceptional non-consolidated uplift for 2022-23), which equates to University Grade 6, point 1, on the basis of completed and approved timesheets, which must be submitted to payroll@law.ox.ac.uk by the last Friday of each calendar month for payment on the last working day of the following month.

In addition, annual leave will be assumed to be taken in the month in which it was accrued.

 

Funding

This opportunity will be funded by a Faculty Internet Engagement Fund grant (FIEF2122-07), with the possibility of funding for further time on the project once the Blog's next benefactor is confirmed (at present, the Blog’s benefactor is Travers Smith).

Guidelines for Faculty members, line managers and students

Work must not commence without a letter of engagement or variable hours contract and a right to work check having been carried out by the Faculty Personnel Officer.

Graduate student engagement opportunities in the Faculty of Law usually fall into one of three categories: Research AssistantGraduate Teaching Assistant; or Blog Editor

Full-time graduate students in the Faculty of Law may work up to 8 hours per week, or a common sense average across the year, regardless of the type of work.

Students may not work for their own supervisor without the approval of the Associate Dean for Graduate Students.

It is expected that the work will be undertaken in the UK.
