The #MeToo movement which came to prominence in 2017 was a cultural and political tsunami in how it challenged and reset mass thinking about sexual activity, consent, and power. In its ongoing aftermath, the world continues to reckon with the sheer scale and mundaneness of the sexual harassment, exploitation and rape, which was revealed to be an aspect of so many women’s experience. #MeToo was a watershed moment, and it is safe to conclude that our thinking about the morality of sexual activity will never be the same.
Sexual Consent in the Post-#MeToo World: A Study in Philosophy and Law, brings together in direct conversation policy-makers, legal practitioners and academics to consider what role legal reform may have to play in promoting better sexual behaviour. Fundamentally, the problems of #MeToo are problems of justice: gender justice, criminal justice, and the justice involved in negotiating sex in an unequal world. As with all problems of justice, we should not expect simple answers; but this project aims to make a dent in them.
