Christos Kypraios

Dr Christos Kypraios is the Research Manager of the Bonavero Institute of Human Rights. In his role, Christos manages key research activities at the Institute, including grant funded projects by AHRC and UNESCO, and oversees their input to the Institute's research strategy. Christos serves as the Bonavero Institute’s representative on the Senior Management Board of the Modern Slavery and Human Rights Policy and Evidence Centre and leads the collaborative projects of the Institute with UNESCO (here, here and here). He is also the convenor of the 'Bonavero Perspectives' series, the weekly in-house workshops where the Bonavero research team members discuss their work-in-progress, and other research fora facilitated by the Institute; he manages and oversees the Bonavero Non-Stipendiary Research Visitor Programme and Early Career Fellowship Programme, both central schemes of the Institute designed to engage external researchers, academics and practitioners in the broad field of human rights, and provides mentoring and guidance to early career fellows at the Institute; and he is the editor of the Bonavero Reports series, the flagship institutional research output of the Institute. In addition to the responsibilities of his role, Christos is pursuing his own research projects, focusing mainly on the application of human rights in the context of space activities and technologies. He is also an SCR member of Mansfield College and a Senior Research Affiliate at the Max Planck Institute for Comparative Public Law and International Law (MPIL) in Heidelberg, Germany.

Christos joined the Bonavero Institute in January 2020, initially as its Programmes Manager (January - December 2020) and then as its Research Manager (January - September 2021), Programmes and Research Manager (September 2021 - June 2022), and Programme Co-ordinator for the project "Bonavero-UNESCO Multilingual Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) for judicial actors on freedom of expression & judicial symposium for judges on freedom of expression" (July 2022 - December 2023). During this time, Christos led, coordinated and supported a wide range of programmatic, research and event projects at the Institute, including i) the Institute's student programmes, such as its Strategising Seminar and Research Training non-credit courses, the Legal Aid Clinic at HMP Huntercombe, the Graduate Student Residency Programme, the Student Summer Fellowship Programme, as well as other student initiatives, such as the annual Bonavero Human Rights Fair, human rights careers events, and human rights mooting; ii) other programmes, such as the Bonavero Research Visitor Programme and Early Career Fellowship Programme; iii) research initiatives and programmes, including convening the weekly internal research workshop series of the Institute, the ‘Bonavero Perspectives’, and acting as the editor of the ‘Bonavero Reports series’; and iv) big collaborative projects on behalf of the Bonavero, such as leading the Institute’s workstand for, as well as representing Bonavero in the Steering Committee of, the Modern Slavery and Human Rights Policy and Evidence Centre; managing, coordinating and delivering the second multilingual Bonavero-UNESCO MOOC on freedom of expression and safety of journalists, the 2023 Bonavero-UNESCO-FCDO Global Conference on Access to Information and the 2023 Bonavero-UNESCO International Judicial Symposium on freedom of expression; and supporting the 2020 Bonavero-UNESCO webinars (in English and French) and first MOOC on freedom of expression in 2021.

Before coming to the Bonavero Institute, Christos worked for six years as a Research Fellow and Senior Research Fellow at the MPIL and as a lawyer in Athens, Greece. He has studied law at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (LL.B (hons.)), the University of Nottingham (LL.M (dist.) in International Law), and the University of Basel (Dr. iur.), as well as international relations (MA (dis.)) and history (MA (dis.)) at Istanbul Bilgi University and Sciences Po Paris. In his doctoral thesis (Springer, forthcoming) Christos analysed the international socioeconomic rights obligations of States and IFIs in situations of sovereign debt management, while his general research interests relate to human rights law, economic law, law of the sea, and space law.
