Naomi-Ellen Speechley

Naomi-Ellen is lead researcher on a project at the University of Oxford, entitled, ‘The Impact of Being Wrongly Accused of Abuse in Occupations of Trust: Victims' Voices’. The study collects new narrative material about the effects of false allegations on the lives of those wrongfully accused.

Prior to this, she provided research assistance on an ESRC-funded project concerning police treatment of youths and securitization, at the University of Cambridge. The project studies how effects of ‘security anxiety’ and policing practices are impacting upon young people's rights and social perceptions. Naomi-Ellen has also worked on a study looking at the Criminal Cases Review Commission’s decision-making and discretion, with Prof. Carolyn Hoyle and Dr Mai Sato at the University of Oxford.

Her research is focused between Criminology and Socio-legal education, and has managed a student Innocence Project for two years. Naomi-Ellen received both her Masters and LLB (Hons) from the University of Leeds, where her postgraduate thesis was shortlisted for the Howard League for Penal Reform’s John Sunley prize in 2014. She intends to undertake a PhD looking at the difficulties with postconviction investigations into cases involving child sexual abuse.
