Josephine van Zeben

Dr Josephine van Zeben is a Career Development Fellow at Worcester College and Tutor in EU and Public Law. She has also been a Lecturer at the ETH Zurich (Switzerland), where she teaches Environmental Regulation, since 2012. She has further held visiting positions at Notre Dame Law School (USA) and La Trobe University (Australia), teaching international environmental law.

Her research centres on the legal management of complex problems in pluricentric systems, for example, the regulation of climate change by the European Union (CUP, 2014). Alongside her environmental research, Dr van Zeben is analysing the role of sub-national actors, particularly local governments, in multi-layered systems. A recent example of this is the application of polycentric governance theory to the European Union (CUP, 2019). She also researches on EU governance more generally, including economic governance. In this capacity she is Series Editor (with Kai Purnhagen) of the series "Studies in European Economic Law and Regulation" (Springer).

Dr van Zeben studied law at the University of Edinburgh, the University of Amsterdam and Harvard University and holds a degree in Social Sciences from Utrecht University (University College). Before coming to Oxford, she was a postdoctoral researcher at the Vincent and Elinor Ostrom Workshop in Political Theory and Policy Analysis (USA).
