Law Faculty Alum and Former Colleague Dr Michael Spence appointed new UCL President & Provost

Dr Spence completed his DPhil in Law at Oxford and went on to become a fellow at St Catherine's College, Chair of the Law Board and Head of the Social Sciences Division. He is recognised internationally as a leader in the field of intellectual property theory.

He is currently Vice-Chancellor of the University of Sydney and will take up his new post at UCL in early 2021. UCL said that it had been “impressed” by his track record including transforming Sydney’s undergraduate experience, boosting its investment in multidisciplinary research and creating strategic partnerships with industry.
Victor Chu CBE, UCL’s Chair of Council, said “Dr Spence is widely regarded as one of the most outstanding university leaders in the world and we are delighted that he has accepted the role as the next President & Provost of UCL."
