Graduate Teaching Assistant in Criminal Law (VOD+)

Deadline for applications: Monday 29th May 2023

Internal applicants (research students) only

In 2022, the Law Faculty created an enhanced Variation of Duties Work and Wellbeing Scheme, known as the 'VOD+'.  Part of this scheme includes the creation of a small number of GTAs to support Tutorial Fellows with their teaching load.  This advertisement is for a GTA in Criminal Law to support James Edwards.

The role in more detail

Organiser: James Edwards

College(s): Worcester and Brasenose

Number of GTAs required: 1

Term(s): Michaelmas Term 2023 and Hilary Term 2024

Topic(s): Criminal Law

Tutorial hours: 4 hours per week, throughout the 8 weeks of Michaelmas Term 2023 and Hilary Term 2024

Teaching appointments for students

A DPhil student will be appointed as a Graduate Teaching Assistant (GTA) to cover the teaching generated by this temporary Variation of Duties, who will be supervised by the Tutorial Fellow in question.  The Faculty will (a) pay the GTA a retainer of £2,235 paid in termly instalments; and (b) directly engage the GTA to give undergraduate tutorials at the Faculty tutorial rate, currently £17.55 per hour. Up to 2.75 hours can be claimed per tutorial hour to include all work related to the tutorials, including, preparation, marking, reporting, and the marking of collections.  (Thus, 4 tutorials a week for 8 weeks represents up to 88 hours of claimable work; and 8 tutorials a week for 8 weeks represents up to 176 hours of claimable work, which will all be remunerated by the Faculty.)  For payroll purposes, annual leave will be assumed to be taken in the month in which it was accrued.

When submitting reports, the GTA must not opt for payment from the college to themselves; they should instead submit timesheets to the Faculty for payment.

The Faculty cannot fund SCR membership, room costs or meals.

The GTA may work up to the weekly limit on paid work specified by the Faculty (8 hours per week, or a common-sense average across the year).

The GTA should have completed the Faculty Preparation for Teaching and Learning at Oxford course by the time teaching commences.
