Funding for on-course students
The Faculty of Law is glad to offer several funding opportunities for on-course students to facilitate their research and support them in difficult financial situations.
If you have any questions regarding the opportunities listed below, please contact us at student.funding@law.ox.ac.uk.
Hardship Awards for all Graduate Law Students
Since 2020/21, the Law Faculty has been maintaining a Hardship budget to support students facing financial difficulties; initially created to help alleviate the worsening of the financial situation caused by the pandemic, in subsequent years, the Hardship Awards have been made available to students in need regardless of the nature of their financial difficulties.
Please remember that the Faculty’s Hardship Fund is designed to help alleviate immediate financial difficulties and is a separate exercise from the Non-Full Funding need-based Awards.
Call for applications:
The Hardship Fund is open for applications throughout the year under the timeline described on the Timeline and Application Procedure page.
Graduate Travel Grants (Research Students)
Any graduate student taking a research degree under the auspices of the Law Board may apply to the Graduate Studies Committee for a grant for travel associated with their studies, although no student may obtain a travel grant from the Faculty in addition to one from any of the Centres in the same academic year.
There are two possible grounds on which a grant may be given. The first is that you need to undertake research somewhere other than Oxford as part of your MPhil/DPhil project. The second is that a chapter of your thesis is being presented at an academic conference.
Call for applications:
Applications are invited during weeks 1 and 2 of each term and should always be made before the event.
Funding for Modern Languages Courses (Research Students)
Any graduate student taking a research degree under the auspices of the Law Board may apply to the Graduate Studies Committee for a grant for Modern Languages Courses (other than English) necessary for their studies. In case of a favourable decision, the funding will cover the full course fees under the Priority Funding Scheme and up to 50% of course fees for the Fast Track Courses with the Oxford University Language Centre. Applicants are encouraged to apply for matching grants from colleges or other sources. Grants will be awarded for language courses which are within the academic year of application but not beyond.
Call for applications:
Applications are accepted throughout the year, but should always be made before the start of the chosen language course.
Non-Full Funding Need-based Bursaries (current DPhil students)
The Non-Full Funding Bursaries for on-course students are designed to help current DPhil candidates secure need-based funding towards their course fees and living expenses for the next academic year. The nature of this exercise is very similar to the one for the new students, and, therefore, different from the Hardship Awards in the following aspects:
- application procedure - the applicants are invited to complete a Means Assessment form.
- target audience - on-course DPhil students
- value of the awards - up to £13,500
The applications are accepted from all on-course DPhil students regardless of the awards they are currently in receipt of, and the year of the programme.
Call for applications:
The application round for funding for the next academic year is usually announced in May; the call for applications, containing all the details and the link to the application form, is sent out by email through the law research mailing list, so in case you are planning to apply for this opportunity, please make sure you are receiving correspondence from law-research@maillist.ox.ac.uk.
If you think your email address is missing from the law research mailing list, please contact student.funding@law.ox.ac.uk.
