Transitional Justice and Stabilisation: Risks or Opportunities?

Abstract

Alex Wilks is Justice Adviser at the UK Government’s Stabilisation Unit where he provides advice on issues affecting stabilisation in fragile and conflict affected states, including Ukraine, Nigeria and Somalia and on Modern Slavery. Previously, he was Principal Programme Lawyer at the International Bar Association’s Human Rights Institute where he ran various justice and rule of law projects including in Afghanistan, Bahrain, Libya, Sri Lanka and Timor Leste, as well as having a regional focus on Latin America. Alex is a UK-qualified lawyer and has an LL.M in International Human Rights Law from the University of Essex.

Nisha Iswaran is a Stabilisation, Security and Justice Adviser in the UK Government’s Stabilisation Unit. She advises across government on Somalia and the Horn of Africa, and thematic security and justice issues. Previous to this, Nisha worked for the MOD, FCO and DFID in conflict posts including as a strategic analyst in Afghanistan and developing the UK’s stabilisation support to Libya. In the private sector, she was an intelligence consultant to UK military and the New Zealand Defence Force and worked for a risk consultancy advising on delivery in conflict-affected environments. She has also worked on community-based development projects in Uganda and Kenya. Nisha holds an MSc in Operational Research and Applied Statistics and has published novel research on conflict analysis of rebel groups involved in intra-state conflict.
