Interested in law, rights of nature, and the environment? Please join the University of Oxford REACH Water Security programme on 11 November (4pm GMT/4pm Bangladesh/9pm Australia) for a virtual celebration of the bilingual Bangla-English translation launch event of the historic 'Rights of Rivers' verdict from the Bangladesh High Court! In February 2019, the High Court delivered a landmark decision granting all rivers with ‘legal personhood,’ declaring all rivers in Bangladesh to have legal protection. Join the discussion and hear from speakers including the HE Saida Muna Tasneem (High Commissioner of Bangladesh to the UK), Justice Ashraful Kamal (the High Court Justice who wrote the verdict), Advocate Manzill Murshid (the lawyer who argued the case), Ms. Sharmeen Murshid (member of the National River Conservation Commission), Mr. Mahfuz Anam (Editor of the Daily Star - the newspaper that broke the story leading to the court case), water law experts, and the translation team. While the time may not be conducive for your timezone, the recording will be made available to those who register through this page. Once registered you will be sent the Zoom link ahead of the event to join.
