This paper deals with the politics of the police in Nigeria's turbulent and consolidating democratic system. It argues that the political orientation of the police cannot be assumed from the structural positioning of the institution, but emerges more from the nature of everyday involvement in political action, in which officers enjoy significant autonomy.
