Oxford City Refugee Week: Immigration Detention on Trial

The injustices of immigration detention are increasingly in the spotlight. On 29 November 1993 the first minibus full of people arrived at Campsfield House in Kidlington. Now some 30,000 people are detained each year in immigration removal centres across the UK. Many have survived torture and conflict, and are seeking sanctuary. Many have lived and worked for years in the UK, and have family and friends and a life here. People are imprisoned without charge, for administrative reasons. Many cannot be deported and are subsequently released. But there is currently no time limit on their detention. Recent inquiries have highlighted major abuses in the immigration detention system. In this Public Meeting, convened as part of Oxford City Refugee Week, experts – by profession and experience - will set out the key issues and recent legal and policy developments relating to immigration detention.
