We are delighted to welcome Professor Carlos M. Vázquez, Scott K. Ginsburg Professor of Law at Georgetown University and Co-Director of the Centre for Transnational Legal Studies in London, to the Discussion Group on 25 February to discuss his paper entitled "Law's Territorial Scope" which examines the nature and proper treatment of provisions limiting a statute's territorial scope. He defends the view that most territorial scope limitations are choice of law rules and, as such, they should be followed by the courts of the enacting state, which should accordingly apply the law of another state to cases beyond the statute's specified scope. The courts of other states may disregard such scope limitations if their own choice of law rules call for the application of the law of the enacting state - and they should disregard such limitations if their own choice of law rules reject renvoi.

The event will be held in the JCR Lecture Theatre in St Catherine's College. The event will begin at 12:30pm and conclude by 13:30pm.

A sandwich lunch will then be available from 13:30pm. Please contact Sophie Ryan if you would like to attend (and please inform her of any dietary requirements you may have).
