Film screening: The Cost of Discrimination

The Cost of Discrimination, an IranWire / Off-Centre Productions documentary film, tells the story of the consequences of discrimination in both Iran and South Africa.

The film explores the parallels between the racial persecution under the apartheid system of South Africa which took place between 1948 and 1994, and the Iranian authorities’ continued persecution of members of the Baha’i Faith, Iran’s largest religious minority community. And it looks at the effects of discrimination on Iranian Baha’is and black or “coloured” South Africans – crucially also connecting these effects to the wider damage inflicted on society and future generations in both countries.

The screening of this documentary will be followed by a short panel discussion, with panellists including Professor Sandra Fredman, Rhodes Professor of Laws and expert on anti-discrimination law, human rights law and labour law, Dr Nazila Ghanea, Associate Professor of international and human rights law and Saleem Vaillancourt from IranWire.

This seminar is co-hosted by Oxford Human Rights Hub, Oxford Lawyers Without Borders and IranWire, and will take place at the Oxford Martin School, located opposite the King’s Arms pub in Holywell Street.
