For Democracy through Law: The Venice Commission of the Council of Europe
The European Commission for Democracy through Law - better known as the Venice Commission as it meets in Venice - is the Council of Europe's advisory body on constitutional matters. The role of the Venice Commission is to provide legal advice to its member states and, in particular, to help states wishing to bring their legal and institutional structures into line with European standards and international experience in the fields of democracy, human rights and the rule of law.
Regina Kiener is Professor of Constitutional and Administrative Law at the University of Zurich. Since 2013, Regina has been a member of the Venice Commission. She is currently a Research Visitor at the Bonavero Institute of Human Rights.
Sir Jeffrey Jowell QC is a barrister at Blackstone Chambers and Professor Emeritus of Public Law, UCL. He was the inaugural Director of the Bingham Centre for the Rule of Law from 2010-15. Sir Jeffrey was UK’s member of the Venice Commission from 2000 to 2011.
