In this lecture, Leandro Ayres França, of the Universidade Estácio Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, will talk about crime and mass incarceration in Brazil. He will start by offering an account of how the war on drugs, a selective criminalisation of poverty and the lack of effective public policies have contributed to the development of organized crime and a chaotic prison situation. He will also discuss his recent publication, Marks of Prison, a sweeping analysis of imprisonment in Brazil, taking in everything from prison architecture and religion to drugs, violence and tattoos.
