The conference reflects on the journey of the EU Constitution, its drafting, endorsement and ultimate rejection, as well as its transformation into the Lisbon Treaty that we see in effect today. The journey of the EU Constitution invites deeper reflection on the basis to European unity and the most appropriate legal framework for the EU in our times. Was the constitution’s ultimate withdrawal an indication of the Brexit to come? To what extent can the EU navigate ongoing tensions between common rules and competing nationalisms? Does Brexit spell an end to greater European integration or does it, in fact, mark the beginning? The conference brings together leading experts from across Europe to discuss these issues and to debate the past and future of the EU project.

The conference is organised by the Programme for the Foundations of Law and Constitutional Government, in the University of Oxford’s Faculty of Law. Those interested in attending should get in touch with Dominic Burbidge.
