The mechanism for challenging elections to the Westminster parliament remains substantially unchanged since 1868 (Parliamentary Elections Act 31&32 Vict. ch. 125) despite, for example, the introduction of the secret ballot, the extension of the franchise, the development of international standards, and the establishment of the Electoral Commission.  It is unlikely that any changes will be made before the 2027(?) General Election. The paper contains a consideration of the issues and makes tentative proposals for reform.

Bob Watt was a Research Visitor at the Bonavero Institute of Human Rights for the academic year 2017/2018.

Leah Trueblood will discuss the paper with Bob.
