The Decolonising the Law Discussion Group invites you to join us for a discussion on caste discrimination outside India. We will begin by looking at the 2015 decision of the UK Employment Appeal Tribunal in Chandhok v Tirkey which highlighted the problem of caste discrimination within the Indian diaspora in the UK. Citing Chandhok, the public consultation by the UK government in 2018 concluded against adding caste as a protected characteristic under the Equality Act 2010. We will look at whether caste discrimination is adequately captured by race or ethnicity, or whether there is still a need to recognise caste as a distinct ground of discrimination. We will conclude by looking at the ongoing caste discrimination litigation against Cisco in the United States.

Speakers

Prof Kevin Brown, Indiana University Bloomington.

Prof Meena Dhanda, University of Wolverhampton.

Prof Michael Ford QC, Deputy High Court Judge, Old Square Chambers and the University of Bristol.

Dr Annapurna Waughray, Manchester Metropolitan University.
