Can you Own Data?
Data are the foundation of the information age yet the legal rights which control access, use and dissemination of data are often misunderstood. We talk of data being an asset which can be bought and sold and contracts commonly refer to an “owner” of the data. During this session Toby Bond, an IP associate from Bird & Bird, will explore the questions which organisations are asking about data “ownership”, the answers currently provided by English law and the questions which remain to be answered. Toby will also highlight some of the common pitfalls in data contracts and review the direction of travel as law makers in the UK and EU attempt to grapple with rights in data.

Each year the OIPRC hosts a number of leading academics from around the world as part of its Invited Speaker Series. These events typically run from 5:15-6:45pm on Thursday evenings in The Dorfman Centre at St. Peter’s College; if the venue or time is different, it will be noted on the Events calendar.
The Speaker Series consists of a presentation of about 45 minutes, followed by a Q&A session with the assembled group of academic staff, students (both undergraduate and graduate), researchers, and interested members of the public. Discussion is informal and includes participants from several disciplines, with a wide range of prior knowledge.
