Pupillage
One Essex Court offers up to five guaranteed 12-month Commercial pupillages and one Intellectual Property pupillage each year.
One Essex Court is committed to providing the finest training to its pupils, nurturing them to be amongst the very best barristers of their generation. In recruiting pupils, One Essex Court seeks intellectual excellence, first-rate presentational ability, and a drive and commitment to excellence. There is no “One Essex Court barrister” - members have diverse backgrounds, pathways to the Bar, interests and personalities and applications are particularly welcome from candidates from backgrounds that are under-represented at the Commercial Bar, including (but non-exhaustively) women, people of minority ethnic origin, people with disabilities and those who are LGBT+.
Applications for pupillage at One Essex Court should be made through the Pupillage Gateway.

Other Opportunities
One Essex Court has a long-standing involvement in mentoring and other support schemes designed to improve equality of opportunity and diversity at the Bar. Current initiatives include:
COMBAR mentoring scheme for underrepresented groups
One Essex Court was a co-founder of what is now the COMBAR Mentoring Scheme for Under-Represented Groups, in which One Essex Court continues to participate. This scheme is designed to encourage individuals from groups which are underrepresented at the Bar of England and Wales (and in particular the Commercial Bar) to pursue careers as barristers.
Bridging the Bar
Bridging the Bar is a charity committed to the promotion of equal opportunities and diversity at the Bar, at all professional levels. One Essex Court is a partner of the Bridging the Bar mini-pupillage scheme.
Bringing [Dis]Ability to the Bar (BDABar)
BDABar is run by and for disabled aspiring barristers, and works to dismantle barriers affecting disabled aspiring barristers and improve accessibility at the Bar. One Essex Court offers pupillages in partnership with BDABar.
Women at the Commercial Bar Careers Scheme
One Essex Court has been running a “Women at the Commercial Bar” programme for the past seven years. As part of this initiative, events have been organised to inform students about life and work at the Commercial Bar, in the hope that more women will consider what we think is a fulfilling, rewarding and female-friendly career. Examples of past events include pupillage applications workshops, pupillage interviews workshops, mentoring schemes and panel discussions.
Open Days
One Essex Court offers a series of Open Days in each academic year where applicants can meet members of Chambers in order to gain a better understanding of the Commercial Bar and of life in Chambers. The programme for each open day typically includes some or all of the following:
- Seminars covering a range of topics concerning the Commercial Bar and the life of a commercial barrister
- Lunch in Middle or Inner Temple Hall, with members of Chambers
- Sessions covering how to become a commercial barrister (including pupillage applications);
- Opportunities for attendees to mingle with members of Chambers and ask any questions they have about the Commercial Bar and Chambers
