Sandy Fredman giving the keynote address in Chile

Professor Sandra Fredman has given the keynote address at the Chilean Supreme Court's international seminar on 17 and 18 May 2023.

The seminar, which explored "The Challenges of Gender Mainstreaming in the Administration of Justice in Ibero-America", took place in Santiago and involved judges from across Chile, as well as from Cuba, Puerto Rico, Mexico, and Colombia.

In her address, Professor Fredman talked about substantive equality's scope for comprehensive protection of disadvantages based on identity. She then outlined the four-dimensional framework of substantive equality in the context of gender:

  1. Redress disadvantage
  2. Address stigma, stereotypes, prejudice and violence
  3. Facilitate voice and participation
  4. Achieve structural transformation which maintain patriarchal power.

Sandra Fredman is Professor of the Laws of the British Commonwealth and the United States and founded the Oxford Human Rights Hub in 2012, of which she is the Director.
