Oxford Wins Prizes and Finishes as Quarter-Finalists at the Cross Examination Moot 2022
In the week of 28 November-2 December, the second edition of the Cross-Examination Moot took place virtually. This is the first standalone global platform to train students on the practice of cross-examination and quantum issues.
Over 300 students and coaches, from 60 teams, representing more than 15 nationalities, participated in over 100 hearings from all corners of the world. Throughout the week, the participants cross-examined witnesses and real quantum experts, based on a mock case that concerned the intersections between the energy-intensive cryptocurrency mining industry, policies aimed at achieving net-zero emissions, and the fluctuating cryptocurrency markets in the context of an M&A transaction, as well as corruption allegations.
A team from Oxford, consisting of Darren Leow (3rd year undergraduate, Somerville), Evan Chou (2nd year undergraduate, Brasenose), and Sushrut Royyuru (BCL, St. Cross), participated in the competition.
The team were one of 8 that qualified for the elimination rounds. Following a closely fought round, the team emerged quarter-finalists.
Additionally, Evan Chou and Darren Leow were respectively named the best and second-best cross-examiners of the competition. Evan was awarded an internship with Gaillard Banifatemi Shelbaya in Paris.
The competition was hosted by Sciences Po, New York University, Queen Mary University of London, and the National University of Singapore. It was sponsored by Compass Lexecon, Dechert LLP, ICC International Court of Arbitration, and Gaillard Banifatemi Shelbaya.
