Oxford Jessup Team Soars High at 2023 International Rounds
The Oxford Jessup Team has made a historic achievement by reaching the quarter-finals and standing as one of the top five teams at the 2023 International Rounds of the Jessup Moot Court Competition held in Washington DC. The team represented the United Kingdom as its National Champion, a title it claimed in February 2023. This year's competition was participated by almost 600 teams from over 100 jurisdictions and was held from the 8th to 15th of April.
The week-long competition, held at the Hyatt Regency Hotel Washington DC was the most complex yet, featuring challenging factual issues that involved the interpretation of a peace treaty, the legality of deadly attacks in allegedly occupied territory, the treatment of prisoners in an armed conflict, the legality of unilateral economic sanctions per international law, the obligations of states in the management and export of hazardous plastic waste, as well as admissibility and standing in three of the above issues.
The team, coached by Israr Khan (DPhil Candidate, Regents Park College) and Rouven Diekjobst (MJur, St Cross College), consisted of Anna Nagel (Jesus College), Antonina Lecka (Merton College), Omid Yeganeh (Lady Margaret Hall), Suneeti Sreekumar (Magdalen College), and Shastikk Kumaran (Mansfield College).
The team started strong by being the first in the elimination round of top 32 teams, then proceeded to the octa finals of the top 16 teams. They finally qualified for the Quarter Finals where they were eliminated. Despite this, the team stood at the top 5 world teams and received many accolades, including the
- Alona M. Evans Award for Top 7th best Applicant Memorials
- Hardy C. Dillard Award for Top 10 overall best Memorials
- The team produced the top 15 best oralists (Omid Yeganeh), top 10 best oralists (Anna Nagel), and top 8 best oralist (Suneeti Sreekumar).
This remarkable achievement of the Oxford Jessup Team is a testament to their talent and dedication, as well as the strength of the Oxford University legal community. The Faculty and the team expressed their gratitude to all those who supported them throughout the competition, giving them unending encouragement and support.
The Oxford Jessup Team's achievement is a proud moment for the University, and we congratulate them on their exceptional performance at the 2023 International Rounds of the Jessup Moot Court Competition.
