Abstract

Orange and black book cover divided diagonally with a drawing of a Black women dresses as a barrister with a white wig and the title 'In Black and White' written in capitals at the top. The subtitle reads 'A Young Barrister's Story of Race and Class in a Broken Justice System' by author Alexandra Wilson.

This talk draws from her book 'In Black and White' to explore her personal journey as a junior barrister navigating the complex intersections of race, class, and privilege within the English legal system. Reflecting on her experiences as one of the few Black women in a profession still grappling with issues of access and representation, she will discuss the challenges of breaking into and thriving in a field historically dominated by a narrow demographic.

The speech will highlight the systemic barriers faced by underrepresented groups in law, the importance of fostering inclusivity within the profession, and the transformative power of diverse perspectives in achieving a truly equitable justice system. By sharing her story, Alexandra hopes to inspire a conversation on how institutions like Oxford can continue to lead the way in promoting diversity and equal opportunity in legal education and practice.
