Notes & Changes

I will defend the view that people enjoy a pro-tanto right against the existence of commemorations in public spaces of figures whose wrongdoing overshadows their achievements. The test for when wrongdoing overshadows the achievements, I will argue, needs to be developed with reference to how the commemoration can affect those who stand to be the most harmed or disrespected by it. A good account of permissible commemoration needs to recognise that there may be no impartial answer to the question of the meaning of a given commemoration and needs to explain whose interpretations will be decisive. I will offer an account of salient commemoration that aims to do that.

Zofia Stemplowska (Oxford) delivers the seventh paper of Michaelmas Term 2022: "Salient Commemoration". The seminar will start at 3:00pm in the Goodhart Seminar Room of University College (Logic Lane).
