Background

The Conference is organized by the Chinese Law Discussion Group (CLDG), a discussion group affiliated with the Faculty of Law, University of Oxford. The CLDG explores a full range of issues with respect to the intersection/comparison of Chinese, civil, and common law and legal traditions as well as international law issues relating to China.

The upcoming conference of 2024 seeks to offer junior researchers, particularly those currently based in Europe, a valuable opportunity to showcase their recent research works and receive feedback from peers and more senior scholars, fostering academic growth and networking within this vibrant community.

The conference received over 60 submissions, among which 40 papers were selected, on a variety of legal issues related to China, including but not limited to the following:

•    Recent developments in China’s judicial reform

•    Law and Society in China

•    The judicial politics in China

•    Administrative law and regulatory practices in China

•    Environmental law in China

•    The Chinese Civil Code and relevant Issues

•    Chinese and comparative corporate law

•    Technology, business and human rights

•    The regulation of AI and emerging technologies in China

•    China and climate change

•    China’s domestic legal regime on foreign relations

•    China and judicial settlement of international disputes

•    China and international economic law

We recognize the significance of interdisciplinary perspectives and are happy to have accepted papers from diverse fields, including law, social science, and beyond.

As the papers to be discussed at the Conference are still works in progress, we kindly request that all workshop participants refrain from citing these drafts or distributing them further unless expressly permitted by the author.

The conference will be held in-person from 31 May to 1 June 2024 at the Faculty of Law, University of Oxford, but online participation will also be available for those who are unable to travel to Oxford.
